The Monk is a new class that will be introduced to World of Warcraft in its fourth expansion, Mists of Pandaria.[1]

In World of Warcraft

Some monks do exist in World of Warcraft. Monks can be found throughout Azeroth; some belong to the Scarlet Crusade, and others are found in the ranks of the draenei.

Class Overview

The monk is the confirmed new class for the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria. They will use Chi as their primary resource. There will be stances, such as Drunken Tiger and Ox. They are not a Hero class, and will start at level 1. Monks will be available to every race except goblins and worgen. [2]

They will wear leather armor, and use fist weapons, staves, polearms, one-handed swords, one-handed maces, and one-handed axes.

Pandaren masters have chosen to share their ancient martial arts with young fighters in both the Alliance and Horde. Harnessing their inner strength and potent "chi" energy, Monks are extremely capable in every role: damage, defense, and healing.
Monks are masters of bare-handed combat, choosing to draw their weapons only for devastating finishing moves. Monk healers bring harmony and balance to every group, healing even the most grievous of injuries with ancient remedies and focused spiritual arts. And few can hope to out-last the unquenchable prowess of the Monk Brewmaster, whose empowering beverages and unpredictable combat style allow them to absorb incredible amounts of punishment.

RPG

Monks are culturally considered ascetic and studious. When Malygos is in humanoid form, he takes the shape of a studious monk or similar individual.[4] Pandaren are formidable monks, following their philosophies to the letter and perfecting their martial arts as they see fit.[5] Runemasters are said to be monk-like as well.[6]

RPG notes

Monks initially were a denied class in the original Warcraft RPG sourcebook, at the time believed not to be relevant to the Warcraft world[7]. However, monks were later incorporated through the Runemaster, and references to monks appear throughout various points in RPG lore as well as in World of Warcraft. However (at the time) no specific monk class was ever created in the RPG, and no specific lore was ever given.
