The Ethereum were the ruling class of ethereal on their homeworld of K'aresh. The Ethereum vowed vengeance upon Dimensius for decimating their world and have been tracking Dimensius ever since...
According to Commander Ameer of the Protectorate," the Ethereum have grown dark... twisted.", as they use the energy of the manaforges to become "void". Vengeance has become their only recourse and any that would stand in their way or not join their cause are considered enemies. Many saw that the Ethereum were plummeting into madness and left. Several of the Nexus-Princes of the Ethereum council abandoned the Ethereum to form other groups and factions with different goals.
Most of the Ethereum members, if not all, appear with red energies[2], this could represent their path into darkness.

In Burning Crusade
Primarily seen in Outland the Ethereum are mainly based in Netherstorm and can be found in the Arcatraz. A group of them, the Bash'ir, is based in the Blade's Edge Mountains. They are capturing different creatures in Ethereum Prisons and the mightiest in Ethereum Stasis Chambers.
Ultimately the Ethereum would come under assault by both the Alliance and the Horde at the behest of the Consortium. Not only would their operations in Blades Edge and Netherstorm be stopped but Nexus-King Salhadaar would be killed. Following their leader's death a group of Ethereum aided Kael'thas Sunstrider and the Burning Legion in the Magister's Terrace, likely led by Yazzai. When heroes entered the Terrace to put an end to the Sun King, these Ethereum would share the same fate as their fallen Nexus-King while defending Kael'thas.
In Wrath of the Lich King
Following the defeat of the forces in Outland and the Isle of Quel'Danas, the Ethereum sent a small force to Northrend. Though their motives are unknown is it known that Wind Trader Mu'fah and Goramosh's were able to work an accord. Though apparently joining the Blue dragonflight in the Nexus War, the Ethereum only appear in the Dragonblight. As such it is possible that while an accord was reached the new leadership of the Ethereum did not become of the accord since Wind Trader Mu'fah and his forces were killed soon after it was reached.
